September is all about the new school year so this month the focus is on general safeguarding updates and any changes introduced by changes to Keeping Children Safe in Education. The key changes are:
- The definition of safeguarding has changed to align with Working Together 2023.
- There is increased emphasis on child exploitation – find out more here – members can download our free bitesize staff training pack to use monthly in staff meetings.
- There is specific mention that children seeing, hearing or experiencing the effects of domestic abuse comes within the general definition of abuse – more here, with our members’ bitesize pack.
- There’s clarity around the responsibilities of schools towards students they place in alternative provision – we’ve a training course on quality assuring AP.
- And as always there’s a requirement to ensure your staff have understand and can discharge their roles and responsibilities under KCSiE Part One.

KCSiE sets out that "Governing bodies and proprietors should ensure that mechanisms are in place to assist staff to understand and discharge their roles and responsibilities as set out in Part one (or Annex A if appropriate) of this guidance." At Safeguarding Network we have developed an online Knowledge Check to help you check your staff not only say they've read the guidance but can also evidence their understand it.
