Children in the Care of Others
Children may live in the care of others under a variety of arrangements with or without the formal badge of "being looked after". These children may face specific risks and it's important we can identify the different arrangements there may be.

Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse affects all parts of society, regardless of perceived social status, type of relationship (e.g., same-sex or heterosexual), gender identity, and cultural or religious background. Where there is domestic abuse in the family, children are vulnerable to several risks .

Perplexing Presentations and Fabricated or Induced Illness
Although rare, there may be times when a parent or carer presents a child as ill or more unwell/more disabled than the child actually is. There are many reasons why this can happen, but children can experience physical harm, emotional harm and neglect as a result of this abuse.

Female Genital Mutilation
Female genital mutilation (sometimes referred to as female circumcision) refers to procedures that intentionally alter and cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is illegal in the UK.

Forced marriages are illegal in the UK as is removing someone from the country to force them to marry in a different country.

So-called ‘honour’-based abuse is abuse that is perpetrated to protect or defend the honour of a family or community.

Many parents with learning difficulties feel doubly discriminated against and feel they are seen as a failure all their lives. They often argue that services do not understand them, do not listen to them and do not expect them to succeed.

Living in poverty can compromise a child or young person’s aspirations, health, well-being and achievements. Education settings play an essential role in easing this impact and creating opportunities.

Parental Drug and Alcohol Misuse
Children are at greater risk of harm when they live in households with parental substance misuse problems, with increased risks of domestic abuse, neglect, a poor home environment and exposure to unsafe substances.

Young carers are all unique. Their caring role will differ depending on the needs of the person they care for. Regardless of the caring role they take on, they face additional challenges at home and in education.
