July 2025

Welcome to your July DSL Planner Page!

This month our Planner focus is Bullying and Hate Crime.

Bullying is often a barrier to learning and can negatively impact all areas of child and adolescent development and wellbeing. We must remember that bullying also negatively affects bystanders and those children and young people who enact the bullying behaviours. Bullying can occur across all areas of a child’s life – out in the community, in their education setting and wherever they are online.

Bullying can cover a wide range of issues, and some forms are illegal (e.g., violence or assault, theft, repeated harassment and hate crimes) and should be reported to the police. Child-on-child abuse can also include bullying.

Hate crimes target people for who they are (their identity) or what they appear to be. Hate crime sends a very personal message to its victim and reinforces patterns of discrimination and prejudice against certain communities and groups of people. Any crime can be prosecuted as a hate crime if the offender has demonstrated or been motivated by hostility and or prejudice.

Do you feel confident that you and your staff know how to identify and respond to bullying? Are you and your staff aware of how addressing bullying links directly to your other safeguarding responsibilities? Are you and your staff secure in your understanding of what hate crime is and how the issue might relate to your students?

Join Safeguarding Network and let us help you develop a structured and comprehensive approach that builds a strong and sustainable safeguarding culture.
