December 2024

Welcome to your December DSL Planner Page!

This month our Planner focus is on Children in the Care of Others.

Children may live in the care of others under a variety of arrangements with or without the formal badge of "being looked after". These children may face specific risks and it's important we can identify the different arrangements there may be.

Families are diverse and have many different forms in the UK. Sometimes they find a ‘fit’ that is best for them, and children grow up in the care of grandparents, friends, ex-partners, the local authority, adopters or others. This can provide children with opportunities they otherwise would not have received but can also mean the child is vulnerable.

Where children are not with their parents, your setting should try to understand how the child came to be living with a person other than their parents in the first place, and what it means for both the day-to-day experiences and longer-term outcomes for that child. Where a child is identified to be privately fostered, you must report this to the relevant local authority

What do you and your staff know about the wide-ranging issue of children living in the care of others? Is the training in your setting up-to-date?

Join Safeguarding Network and let us help you develop a structured and comprehensive approach that builds a strong and sustainable safeguarding culture.

Question: A child is privately fostered when there is a plan for them to live with someone who is not a close relative for how many nights?

You’ll find the answer on our Private Fostering resource page… We have a whole set of quiz questions and scenarios for your team in our member resource packs.
