Early Years DSL Training

This course is designed to strengthen the confidence and competence of Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) and their deputies working in Early Years settings. The statutory requirements outlined in Annex C of the new EYFS states what should be included for the DSL.

Training for the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) should take account of any advice from the local safeguarding partners or local authority on appropriate training courses.


In addition to the areas set out in paragraph 2, training for the DSL must cover the elements listed below:

  • How to build a safe organisational culture.
  • How to ensure safe recruitment.
  • How to develop and implement safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • If applicable, how to support and work with other practitioners to safeguard children.
  • Local child protection procedures and how to liaise with local statutory children's services agencies and with the local safeguarding partners to safeguard children.
  • How to refer and escalate concerns (including as described at paragraph 3.9 of the EYFS).
  • How to manage and monitor allegations of abuse against other staff.
  • How to ensure internet safety.

Presenter

Sharon Birch

Sharon joined Safeguarding Network in 2022 as a consultant.  She is a highly experienced professional with many years working with children and families.

Sharon had her own Outstanding Early Years setting for seventeen years and is a retired police detective with extensive child protection experience. She also has broad experience in safeguarding as a consultant.

Aims and objectives:

Led by an experienced Early Years safeguarding professional, this course provides in-depth exploration of the DSL role within Early Years setting.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the expectations and challenges of the DSL role within Early Years settings
  • Gather, assess, and manage safeguarding information effectively
  • Make effective referrals and maintain accurate, compliant record keeping
  • Share information appropriately and work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies
  • Promote and embed a whole-setting safeguarding culture that prioritises child wellbeing
  • Apply professional curiosity to identify and respond to safeguarding concerns
  • Demonstrate effective challenge and understand whistleblowing procedures
  • Manage additional responsibilities, including internet safety and allegations against staff
  • Recognising and responding to 'Child's Voice' and understanding Intent, Implement and Impact with respect to safeguarding
  • Understand and respond to inspection criteria related to safeguarding in Early Years
  • Recognise the importance of ongoing training, supervision, and reflective practice
  • Build professional confidence and competence to lead safeguarding effectively

What you need to know to attend:

The course will be delivered over Zoom over two dates – 17th November & 1st December.

It will run from 09:30-4pm (with half an hour lunch) on both dates.
