Welcome

Safeguarding Governors are "a senior board level lead with the required knowledge, skills and expertise or sufficiently qualified and experienced to take leadership responsibility for the organisation’s/agency’s safeguarding arrangements", required in Working Together to Safeguard Children and Keeping Children Safe in Education.

Safeguarding Network has substantial experience in supporting staff and governors in developing healthy, positive school cultures where concerns are identified and responded to promptly. In your role as Safeguarding Governor you have leadership responsibility for your setting's safeguarding arrangements and, throughout the year, we support you with materials to for learning walks, helpful questions for the governing body, structures for safeguarding reports, training and advice by telephone or email as you need it.

Please note:  We recognise that there are a number of different forms of governance structure within education and early years settings.  However, for ease and readability, we have referred to governor / governing body on this page.

What does safeguarding governor membership include?

There is not a lot of guidance or support for this crucial role and many Safeguarding Governors feel less than confident in their role, so building on the success of our work with Designated Safeguarding Leads we have created a Safeguarding Governor membership to provide structure and advice for individuals in this important duty.

  • Learning walks

  • A calendar with reminders around governor responsibilities

This half-term's materials

Every half-term Safeguarding Network produce a summary of a particular topic with links to more information, a suite of materials to support governors in learning walks (other governors can undertake some of these - they give an opportunity to structure some of your enquiries), questions for your DSL and questions or sometimes audit tools for the governing body to ask the DSL and their team to ensure you have proper oversight of safeguarding in your setting.

Over time this will help develop a better understanding of safeguarding at a strategic level and highlight areas for development. You are also able to access the archive to explore a particular topic back to the start of the governor programme in September 2022.

This half-term's materials relate to Safeguarding and Alternative Provision.

Calendar

This year, we have another set of six learning walks to guide you through key areas, based on national hot topics and areas of focus as well as helping you to consider you processes for reporting and understanding safeguarding data and information.
