November 2024

Welcome to your November DSL Planner Page!
This month our Planner focus is on Domestic Abuse.
Domestic abuse affects all parts of society, regardless of perceived social status, type of relationship (e.g. same sex or heterosexual), gender identity, cultural or religious background.
Being exposed to domestic abuse can place children at risk of significant harm and negatively impact upon their emotional and behavioural development. Children can be further affected when adult victims of domestic abuse sometimes find it difficult to be the caring, supportive parents they would want to be (even after leaving the abusive relationship) because they are being or have been hurt and traumatised by their experiences.
KCSiE tells us that all staff should have an awareness of safeguarding issues that can put children at risk of harm and that the safeguarding training all staff receive should be updated regularly.
What do you and your staff know about the issues of domestic abuse? Is the training in your setting up-to-date?
Join Safeguarding Network and let us help you develop a structured and comprehensive approach that builds a strong and sustainable safeguarding culture.

What could you do for the 16 Days of Action against Domestic Abuse?
- Walk around your setting looking for evidence domestic abuse is a priority and that staff, visitors and students know what to look for and what to do if they're worried.
- Think about how your curriculum prepares your students for recognising healthy and unhealthy relationships.
- Use your Safeguarding Network pack (free this month for non-members with a planner) to run a 20 minute bitesize session in your staff meeting.
- Ensure you have an up to date list of domestic abuse charities for survivors, perpetrators, and students in your local area. Could you reach out to hear more, fundraise, or hear from them in a team meeting?
- Scenarios - Safeguarding Scenarios with separate Scenario DSL notes to aid discussion and support sharing of best practice.
