October DSL Resources

Welcome to the many new members who have joined Safeguarding Network over the summer. Our Keeping Children Safe in Education materials will be available all year to help you roll out and embed the new guidance with presentations and the KCSiE online quiz to really test that knowledge has been embedded.

We are now back into the swing of our monthly in-house safeguarding training sessions with materials on poverty and homelessness below. Have you set aside15-20 minutes each month of your staff meetings to run the presentations or scenarios?

Free DSL forum support

We've had so much positive feedback and would love to have your help in getting the word out to other DSLs. If you're part of a network or forum of 10 or more schools we are more than happy to visit and showcase Safeguarding Network.

To add value we are also happy to deliver a presentation on a key safeguarding topic such as managing allegations about staff and volunteers. Contact us for more information.

How many telephone numbers do you have for your students' family or carers? KCSiE states two, good practice is for three.

  • Poverty: According to the DWP poverty affects around 30% of children in the UK.
  • Homelessness: The Children's Commissioner estimates around 600,000 (5%) of children in England are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

This month's training focuses on poverty and homelessness - whilst not necessarily a safeguarding concern, it is important that we know the potential impact of these issues and are amongst the subjects that KCSiE requires us to keep staff updated on. We have a page about poverty and one about homelessness on the site and you can access the same set of resources on either page:

  • a presentation and notes
  • a quiz and answers
  • a handout
  • a whole group exercise
  • a scenario.

Your CPD

This month's Safeguarding Insight explores the boundary between obesity and safeguarding, whilst also highlighting the links to poverty.
