June DSL materials

You will hopefully be aware of the new Inspecting safeguarding in early years, education and skills settings guidance published by Ofsted last month which brings safeguarding into the leadership & management judgement.

With Safeguarding Network you're all set to meet the "clear and effective arrangements for staff development and training in respect of the protection and care of children and learners" with a clear plan of training through 2019/20. You may wish to review other training required, including DSL and face-to-face training for staff with our training grid.

This month we are focusing on parental mental health - you can access the resources at safeguarding.network/parental-mh. You need to be a member and logged in as a DSL to access the training materials, although there's also lots of other useful information and free resources on the page.

You'll find:

  • a 6 minute film on children living with parental mental ill health with supporting questions for your team and tips for the DSL
  • a presentation and notes
  • a quiz and answers
  • a schools scenario to consider
  • a scenario for children's homes and fostering providers.

Your CPD

This month we are focusing more widely on the impact of safeguarding on young people, protecting them from longer term harm. After the death of three young people in Croydon in 2017 they undertook a review of sixty young people who had poor outcomes or were of considerable concern. The learning extends throughout childhood, within schools and beyond.

Free training...?

Safeguarding Network is growing month by month, but we're keen to meet more schools or homes. If you can find half a dozen organisations in your local area to join the network, they'll not only benefit from the resources but we'll come out to meet you all and offer a free day's training on a topic of your choice... managing allegations, safer recruitment, DSL update... the choice is yours!
